I think orchids have an undeservedly bad reputation of being difficult to grow. I do not think that orchids are that much harder to grow, all they need is a little specialized attention. A specific orchid is not any harder to grow than the next as long as you know what it needs and is capable of providing it. Before you buy an orchid, just learn what its needs are. If you can provide the same basic growing conditions as where it is found in the wild you will do fine. Hybrids are generally more forgiving than pure species, but we all know how stupid it is to generalize… Besides, after a while you will learn what types of orchids best suit your growing style. Those will be the easy ones - for you.
I have written down a few things that I have learned about growing orchids over the years. Look under “how I grow my orchids” in the menu. I hope it can help you succeed with yours.
A few “how to” guides
- To read about how to deflask orchid babies, check this post.
- Download a basic care sheet for Phalaenopsis orchids (in Swedish), download PDF.
Check out the “Orchid Resources” in the right column. There are a lot of really handy sites there… if you know of more good recources, let me know and I will add them to the list.
Disclaimer: This information should only be used as a guide. Many other factors will need to be taken into account when you decide on the cultural methods that best suit you and your plants. This is just how I do it and it works for me. I have grown orchids for many years and done a ton of research, and learned a lot by trial and error… and I still learn new stuff all the time! (But when I do learn new stuff, I will try to update these pages for you guys too.)
