A few more flask babies out of the nest

Cattleya schillerianaThis weekend the remaining Cattleya schilleriana flask babies moved out of the community pot to single occupancy dwellings.

Since I mounted the first few babies several months ago and placed them in the warm vivarium, I wanted to try growing these in intermediate conditions.

I mounted the strongest one and hung it in the window, the remaining little ones went into pots. Since schilleriana likes well drained media I placed them in tiny plastic mesh pots for good ventilation, then bark, perilite and vulcanic rocks as media. I will keep these in the nursery a while longer, then they will also move out on the windowsill.

    Nice Website!
Lots of information. I did a search on Cattleya intermedia orlata and your site showed up. Cattleya
schilleriana grows well under warm condition and very high light.

I have been growing orchids since 1984.

  • Hi Wayne, Thank you very much. I am glad to hear that you like my blog. :) My lovely Cattleya intermedia just finished blooming, a highlight every year. I am growing a few of my C. schilleriana flask babies in the warm vivarium and a few in the intermediate growing room just as a test, both under good lighting conditions. We’ll see how they all do. If the room gets too cold this winter they might all get to move into the warm vivarium. Eventually I plan to keep one or two and trade/sell the rest top make room for more different species.
